Don’t worry—when you make your own, you can control the flavor.

Makes: 3 to 4 Servings

Sharp knife (adult needed)
Large mixing bowl
Measuring cup
Measuring spoons
Mixing spoon


ripe tomatoes, cored and diced
small red onion, peeled and finely chopped
2 cloves
garlic, peeled and minced
bell pepper (any color), cored, seeded, and chopped
jalapeño chile, seeded and finely chopped (if you like spicy) (be very careful NOT to touch your eyes)
1⁄4 cup
finely chopped fresh cilantro leaves
1 tablespoon
fresh lime juice
1⁄4 teaspoon
cayenne (if you like spicy)
1⁄4 teaspoon
kosher salt


  1. Put all the ingredients into the mixing bowl and mix well.
  2. Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour and up to overnight.
